Retrograde is a locally made, sustainable coffee alternative crafted entirely from natural, beanless ingredients. Retrograde reimagines Ethiopian coffee traditions and offers hope for a future where the environment and vibrant cultural traditions aren’t sacrificed for a quick morning fix.

This conceptual project introduces a new brand concept and packaging design that celebrates sustainability and cultural appreciation, catering to environmentally conscious consumers seeking a meaningful morning ritual.

A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Drawing inspiration from Ethiopian culture and Afrofuturism, the packaging features the Jebena, a traditional coffee pot central to the Ethiopian coffee ceremony, as its focal point. This iconic vessel represents the rich history that informs the innovative beanless brew, aligning with the brand's tagline 'The Past is the Future.

Traditional Shapes, Modern Design

Inspired Ethiopian art, the packaging's pattern seamlessly blends traditional shapes and textures found in historic paintings. This nod to Ethiopian culture creates a visually engaging and authentic design.
